Have you ever wanted to make something so cute and realistic to the original that you just refuse to eat it?

You have come to the right place! Because these little nests are adorable and they have a strong resemble to the real thing. Of course I didn't eat any because I was too busy taking a thousand pictures of them. Everything in the picture looks mess-free but behind that lens was a natural disaster. Especially cleaning up spun sugar that dried up inside the kitchen pot. Good news, there is an easier way to clean it up.

Without wasting anymore of your time, let's teach you how to do this.

You'll need the following items..

  1. Cake Box Mix
  2. Sugar
  3. Gum/Chocolate Eggs
  4. Donut maker

The donut mixture (cake box) is the simplest thing you need to do. Just follow the directions and set aside while you're waiting for your donut maker to preheat. I used the babycakes mini's donut maker. It's so simple to use and never gave me any issues.

Making the donuts.

For this part, you'll need to use your batter that you have set aside. I recommend using a syringe because it's much more precise and will create less of a mess. Unfortunately I didn't have one available to me so I used a spoon. Both work but one is a more cleaner option.

Using your syringe or spoon, grab some batter and gently pour it into the donut moulds. Try not to fill them up too high because the batter will rise. They need to be at the right amount (usually just below the top of the mould edge) as to avoid any spillage. When you're satisfied with the amount, quickly close the donut maker lid and leave it for at least one minute. After that time has passed, use a fork to flip them over to grab them more easily. Then just place them a plate to cool.

That part is done.

Now for the spun sugar.

Yes, this part is a bit challenging if it's your very first time doing it, as it was for me. However, it wasn't as difficult as I had believed it to be. The spun sugar you see in the photos are from my very first time!!

Beautiful colour.  Hell of a mess though.

To make spun sugar, combine one cup of sugar and a little bit of water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Don't add too much water. I was told not to mix anything but to just let it boil on its own. It took approximately 15 minutes for me to notice boiling and colour changes. I was looking for a light amber. Next, I immediately removed it from the stop top and placed it on a folded kitchen cloth on the countertop. I made sure to make room on the counter for me to splatter my spun sugar. I placed parchment paper down on the counter and used my wire whisk (I didn't cut the ends like most people do) to dip into the melted sugar (make sure it is slightly cooled before you dip) and motioned my hand from side to side until I created spun sugar string. I then used that string and formed a nest and gently placed it on my donut nests from earlier.

That part is done. Not so bad, right?

Now for the eggs.

Really easy. Not much to say other than find three separate eggs of different colours and plop them into the centre of the nest. You're done! Now all you need to do is take a picture of them, share it on Facebook and wait for the likes to pour in ;) ...that's not what I did of course..
